There was a time when I wasn’t in the driver seat in my life. What people thought and how things looked was very important to me. I valued recognition, certainty, control and productivity. I would make long lists of things to do and felt satisfaction from checking them off as done! I particularly loved it when I could check them off two at a time marveling at my multi-tasking capabilities. I was busy, busy, busy… and too busy to see that I was not cultivating or creating. I was losing sight of what was truly important to me and what made me come alive.
Because of the go-Karen-go treadmill I created, I found I could not confidently answer ‘yes’ that I was living my intended life. I could not say that I felt inspired, joyful and living purposefully as I defined it. I was strong, tough and ambitious, but I was not showing up as the ‘me’ I wanted to be. And, it occurred to me that if this were true, I was not showing up fully in how I lived. Somewhere along the way, I created a tough outer shell that housed the real me that only came out under safe circumstances. Wow. My biggest source of stress and anxiety was shelving me and it was my own doing.
That revelation put me on the path to wholehearted living cementing courage and authenticity as standards I could no longer live without. It meant letting go of the need for certainty, letting go of what people think, letting go of exhaustion as a status symbol and being vulnerable enough to risk falling down to move forward. And yes, it meant that imperfection isn’t always pretty but it is real and always a stepping stone to a more meaningful life.
I believe that being seen as the authentic best me in all areas of my life is as critical as breathing. It allows me to step boldly into my personal greatness, potential, and purpose. It prepares me to navigate the challenges that authentic living will invariably bring. It makes me courageous and I want to work with people ready to be courageous!
Inspired living and working is a challenging journey and not everyone chooses this path, but it is also the launch pad for transforming our lives and the lives of others that we touch. Marianne Williams says, “When we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” When we live, love, parent and lead with the purpose of our authentic light being seen we create a platform for others to do the same. This is the journey I am on and I welcome you to join me. It is the only path I can take.
