Intentional Living

2008-02-17

I am a list maker and sometimes that can give you the false sense of doing and getting things done.  There is something about making lists that is gratifying and it is more gratifying to check them off.  At the end of the day, the myriad of little black checks on a paper is a barometer of making progress and moving.  However, are you just looking for moving?  How about being a mover and a shaker?  An ordinary list won't give you that.

What give a list life is passion and intention.  Intention is to do something with purpose.  Purpose is to pursue with determination and resoluteness.  Add something to your list that causes you to sweat when you think about the challenge; makes you shudder with the "I don't know if I could" or something you wanted to do as a child and tucked it away for more sensible dreams.  Put something on your list that matters and has true purpose.  Add something that makes a difference instead of just a check.  How about adding something so delicious, it causes fear.  I don't mean danger.  I mean the exhilarating fear of change and challenge.

Is the scratching sound of a pencil on a paper while making the check mark enough for you?  It is a lovely sound, but how much more gratifying would it be to do it with the flair of intention.  Be bold enough to add something to your list that you dream of when you have free moments.  Put something on your list that addresses a lifelong challenge.  How about something that makes you go back to college or trade school to learn something new?  Add something that makes your next career move radically different from what you are doing this very moment.   The most important thing is that it is an item of purpose with an intentional move to make it happen.

When we were children, we were intentional little people.  Not everything made sense from the perspective of an adult, but we were passionate about it and so sure, it would work or happen.  We pursued it with purpose, passion and intention. The reality was not everything worked perfectly, but it did not have to.  Just the fact that it worked just a little bit would be enough for us to believe that it was still possible.  It is the same 'belief acorn' you need right now to make your dreams happen.  Just that tiny seed of belief could make all the difference in the world.

Try this.  Instead of making the standard 'to do' list with things to do listed in a vertical, orderly column, evoke the view of a child.  Make it look like a bike wheel with your name in the hub and on each one of the spokes, list your intentional acts of magnificence, dare or joy.  Think of that wheel moving forward towards a much more exciting life.  And if you really dare, clip playing cards on the spokes to make noise.  Put streamers in the wheels and yell out as you go up and down the hills.  Remember what it felt like to do that as a child and intentionally weave that back into your life.  The ride will be fantastic.
